Triple Skunk!

Howdy Folk's!

Yes, it's true.  I've been out to ice fish three times this year and I've been skunked all three times.

Let me tell ya, these southern fish just want to sleep down here till warmer weather arrives.  I can't say I blame em.

Gladys and I tried waking em up by clearing some snow off the ice so light would get in.  Also, we sprinkled oats in to try and get their attention.  Sadly, the breakfast and sunshine did not entice the fish to bite.

Oh, school was closed on this nice sunny day, due to the weather.  Was it just me, or did Duneland schools make us kids freeze?  Anyway, too cold for school, so I took the kids ice fishing. Gotta toughen kids up a bit these days.  Don't Judge.

Besides, Gladys was too warm and had a ball practicing her-- I got a fish on, look:

The next day, Jean and I tried the pond at Fall's park.  I thought for sure we'd get a slew of fish there.

We set the shanty up in the middle of the pond.  Also, had the tip-up out for catfish.  Not even a bite!

The highlight of the day was watching our snowpants steam dry with the lantern heat.  Smokin!

Getting skunked still beats hanging around the house and going nuts with cabin fever.  Besides, I now know where the fish are not; good to get that out of the way.  :)

My next post will have a fish in it!  Ya'all take care-- this could be awhile.

Skunked at the Quarry

The lampshade photo bombed Troy.  :)

Gladys has been making all kinds of things out of these bands lately.  Here is her newest creation:

Gladys went out to the quarry to skate while I fished.  It's hard to tell from the pic, but she swept a track off around the boat launch for a skating rink.

She is getting pretty good on those skates.

Every now and then she'd skate out to the shanty to check on me and fish.

I started out fishing in 12 feet of water, but didn't have any bites, so I went deeper.

I moved to 20 some feet and still did not have any bites.  I placed the tip-up at a drop off of over 20 feet and it still had an untouched minnow on it at the end of the day.

After a few hours, we decided to go for a walk and fish near the creek.

I drilled the holes and water kept gushing up.  After 20 minutes we were pooled with about 4" of water and still no bites.  The depth there was also around 20 feet of water.

Gladys and I moved around looking for fish and we got skunked.

It was a nice and relaxing way to spend a Sunday afternoon though.

In other news, I tried a new church this past Sunday.  Our church was closed for the second Sunday in a row due to bad weather.  The new church had a bulletin with my good friend Mike's name in it, who happens to be a pastor.  Both the first and last name were the same, but it's not the same Mike.  I'm taking it as a sign of assurance though.

Coffee Cake and America's Got Talent

Oh Boy, I have a lot to tell you!  First, lemme start off with the weather.  It's been crazy here.  One day will be completely freezing cold negative something and the next will be almost 40.  Plus, the wind has been totally nuts.  The wind was so bad that it blew the fuse out from the power line going to my house. It's fixed now.

The weather was also responsible for a major change in my weekend plans.  I was looking forward to going up north to Valparaiso this weekend to visit Mom and do some ice fishing with friends.  Also, Heather, my niece with the twins in the oven, had her baby shower this weekend.  Well, come time to head north and the weather was blowing snow so bad that the highway was closed.  Sigh.  I made Coffee Cake to take on the trip that I never went on.  This creamy, nutty-topped cake melts in your mouth.  (Recipe at the end of this post.)

The one good thing about this freezing cold weather is-- the lakes are froze and it's ice fishing time!  Woohooo!

The quarry near my house had no trace of footsteps.  I walked to the end of the pier and tested the snow covered ice.  I was happy to find a solid 5 inches.  Fishing time!

Before I could really stay there out for a few hours with the kids and fish, I needed to prepare a few things.  A heated ice shanty makes cold weather fishing so much nicer.  Thus, I went home and loaded up the shanty.  I also, needed propane for the lantern, which I thought was stored in the toon.

It wasn't in there, but Jean found it at the house.  However, Glenn talked me and the kids into going to the Indy Convention Center.  Mainly cause I needed to visit a bait shop.  This is what the day looked like from my back yard:

As we ventured out, I could see why the highway (65northbound) was closed.

Then it got worse.  There were times the driving conditions were a complete white out.

We arrived safely at out destination.  The Convention Center was having a Golf Show and hosting America's Got Talent auditions; Glenn was there for both.

At the Golf show we all took turns trying out the latest styles of drivers.  Jean, Gladys and Troy each did very well.  I did okay.  Glenn rattled a few lights.

Noo, that is not golf jargon, he literally hit the lights with the ball-- several times.  Incredibly, he also managed to get a few on the green.

After the golfing, we went to the set of America's Got Talent (AGT).  However, the rules state that only the contestant and there plus one are allowed.  Do you think that was going to stop us?

Not a chance.  The holding room was packed.  The kids found random strangers to take them in.  JK-- sorta-- I stayed with them.  It was neat seeing everyone getting there acts together-- pun intended.  :)

The random strangers were really nice and cooperative.  We even got autographs from some.  It will be interesting to see which acts will get picked.  They will all find out in February sometime.

A singer, Reece'cee Cup, that the kids liked, (and incidentally asked him to be there daddy), caught us in the hall as we were leaving for a pic:

Coffee Cake

1/2 Cup Butter
1 Cup Sugar
2 Eggs
1 Tsp. Vanilla
2 Cups Flour
1 Tsp. Soda
1 Tsp. Baking Powder
1/4 Tsp. Salt
1/2 Cup Sour Cream
1/2 Cup Ricotta Cheese

Topping:
1/2 Cup Chopped Pecans
1/2 Cup Brown Sugar
1 Tsp. Cinnamon
2 T. Butter

Preparation: Cream butter and sugar. Mix in eggs and vanilla.  Beat flour, soda, salt and baking powder into the wet mixture.  Add sour cream and cheese.  Spread in 2 round cake pans, or one 9 X 13- inch pan.  Mix all topping ingredients together and sprinkle over cake batter.  Bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes.

A Shopping Weekend

 Hello January!

I've begun to accept being cold.  This is something I tend to go through every year.  It starts to get cold out and I fight it.  I start wearing gloves and a hat.  My coats get thicker and thicker.  I put an extra layer on, than another.  Well, I'm MAXED out now.  Each time I go out to play, I've got all the layers I can handle on and still my body is cold.  Who knows, maybe it really is a thyroid problem.  All I know is, today was the day that I bundled up and went outside knowing full well that its winter and I'm going to be cold.  In other words, I quit trying to fight it.  It's funny, but I've even contemplated embracing the cold as never before-- by taking the POLAR PLUNGE.  You see, jumping in a freezing cold lake all the sudden appeals to the rebel in me.  Maybe if I did such a thing, I'd have a new perspective on cold.  Anyways, I'll keep ya'all posted.

Did ya'all know I was in the market for a new mattress?  Well, I am. My current mattress makes me totally miss my water-filled mattress.  It's not very old, but it's super soft and not good for a husband with back issues, than again I guess the waterbed wasn't either.  I thought we would be good candidates for the Sleep Number bed, since I like a soft snugly bed and my husband, in his own words to the sales person says, "I caveman, I like rock!" .  See what I'm up against?  The Sleep Number seems to offer the best of both worlds.

The only trouble is that, we didn't like it.  To be fair, we never even tried the true Sleep Number brand, yet.  It was what our sales person referred to as comparable though.  The thing we didn't like was the ridge in the middle of the bed that formed between us.  I felt like I had a kid I still needed to tuck in, granted it did hold still though. :)

We went on to look at the other beds in the showroom and Boy, was I sticker shocked!  My favorite bed was almost 4 grand!  Are you kidding me?  What the heck are they making these beds out of?

And it didn't stop with just the mattress, the suggested fitted protector sheet was $200.  Yikes!!  I felt like I was living in the dark ages and all the sudden my bag of feathers and leaves and the husbands rock would be perfectly fine.

Then we took a look at a mid-range bed and it was comfy too.  Actually, it was really hard to tell how I liked one bed from another because I needed to try it out for the night.  The five minutes of lying down were nice and all, but it's not the same as trying to fall asleep.  We decided to-- sleep on it (pun intended), hehe.  Yes, we went home with nothing, except the thought of possibly hanging hammocks from the ceiling.

For lunch, I tried something new to me, roasted red peppers.

I thought they looked pretty. So, I put one on my veggie burger.

Took a big ole bite, and guess what?  I didn't like it.  They have a taste that reminded me of nail polish remover.  If only they tasted as good as they looked.  I'm sticking with the good ole tomato from now on.

Saturday we all went to a flea market in Indy.

Gladys and Troy got to try out some exercise devices.  I liked the flippy chair; I used to play on one of those in the basement when I was a kid.

Glenn picked out his ultimate salt and pepper shaker.  Slowly he is taking over decorating the house. Soon we will be living in a kitchen full of dragons and a living room full of aliens.  Blah, Send Help!

He has begun making an alien mask.  A Predator Bio-Mask to be specific.  Sigh.

Well, the good news is, (to make up for the snow days), the kids have school on Martin Luther King Day!  YaY!!  After all, I can't have em just hanging around the house, bugging me, eating ice cream, and making faces now can I?

Ahh, we took the Ice Cream Eaters out to Steak N Shake.  Jean and I both had the Frisco melt.  While Glenn ate a triple decker cheeseburger with bacon all by himself, as usual.

We made it home in enough time to make snow angels before the wind picked up.

And go sledding.

And snowshoeing/skiing.

Gladys got these old snowshoes out of the basement.  She really books down the hill on em.

Sunday morning was blueberry pancake time.  Yum.

Our church services were cancelled due to the weather.  It surprised me since it really didn't seem to be hazardous out.  We decided to go to our old church instead of just staying home.  We all really liked our old church and thought they had a very captivating message about DOING God's word.  The commitment we have to help our current church lasts until March.  After that, I'm not sure where God will have us worshiping at or in what ways we will get to serve. Hmm... Does Hawaii need missionaries?  jk

After church, we changed into our play clothes and went to the hardware store for a new shower head.  I like me a good shower.  The old one was broke and spraying all over the place.  Jean and Troy took an imagination toboggan ride.

When we got home, I made veggie stir fry for supper.  It consists of a package of frozen veggies, the rest of the kale I had on hand, an egg, garlic, and whole wheat noodles. I make my own sauce out of soy sauce, jelly, and bit of red wine.  Good stuff.  I don't measure, but just toss in a little of this and that.

For a snack later, I had strawberries, pineapple and cottage cheese.  Oh, and iced tea.  It does seem kinda weird to place a glass of iced tea on a winter scene place mat.

But I like it anyways.  :)
